PE 11/12 Course Outline

Physical Education 11/12

Course Description:

The P.E. 11 / 12 course is an extension of the P.E. 10 program. Students will have the opportunity to participate in many field trips, which may include lazertag, rock climbing, racquetball, dragon boating, the Grouse Grind, golfing, and many more.

Evaluation for the P.E. 11 / 12 classes is extended from the pattern of evaluation for P.E. 8 – 10. Marks will be based upon participation, personal and social responsibility, and PEC’s (Physical Education Credits). While fitness is assessed, the focus of course evaluation is on interpreting and using the data collected to develop and carry out an action plan.  Additionally, while there is greater emphasis placed on the participatory portion of the course, there is some recognition that students tend to most enjoy participating in activities in which they have a base skill level that allows them to successfully participate.

EXPECTATIONS:

It is expected that all students taking Physical Education will:

-     Participate in each activity to the best of their ability.
-     Wear appropriate P.E. strip at all times.  Arrive in class on time and remain in class until the bell rings.
-     Provide an explanatory note for absences or medical restrictions.
-     Not bring unnecessary personal property to class.
-     Leave all valuables in a locked and/or secure location.
-     Refrain from bringing food (including gum) or beverages into the gyms or change rooms.
-     Use the equipment provided in a safe and sensible manner.
-     Conduct themselves in a positive, respectful, and co-operative manner.
-     Assume on-going responsibility for their performance in the course.

EVALUATION:

Daily Participation (80%) – students will be evaluated daily out of 3:

  • prepared / on time / in PE strip = 1
  • participation / cooperation = 1
  • personal social responsibility  / attitude = 1

Physical Education Credits (PEC’s) (20%) –- students will have the option during the course to complete assignments of choice from a variety of assignments available online through the Alpha PE 11/12 PEC website.  PEC assignments may include preparation and participation in fieldtrips, completion of web based research assignments connected to classroom lessons, maintaining activity logs, planning and leading various class activities such as lessons, warm ups, and tournaments, and a variety of others.

* Assignments will be given credits for completion. Be sure to note the DUE dates. Students will be able to track their PEC’s obtained online throughout the term.  Students will complete and submit a self-assessment at term’s end for course evaluation.

MEDICALS:

Students should advise their P.E. teacher of all medical restrictions as soon as they are known.

Students who need to be excused from class for a short period of time (three classes or less) are required to bring a note from their parents or guardians. This note should be presented at the beginning of the excused period.

Students who need to be excused from class for a longer period of time (more than three classes) are required to bring a note from their doctor. Students will work with their P.E. teacher and the school librarian to develop and complete an appropriate research assignment to better understand their condition, its limitations, and develop and carry out a safe, return to physical activity plan under the supervision of a medically qualified practitioner.

Participation:

Participation in Physical Education classes should be both a rewarding and an enjoyable experience. It should be an opportunity to increase your understanding of Physical Education concepts, to increase you ability to perform Physical Education skills, to improve your level of physical fitness and to increase your ability to appreciate and enjoy physical activities. However, this will only happen if you approach your Physical Education classes with a positive, co-operative and responsible attitude. Admittedly, it is not always easy and it does take some effort; but it is worth it. Do the best that you can; you will succeed. Good luck and have a rewarding and enjoyable year!
